Risha Talks: The price of inclusion is cheaper than the price of exclusion | Risha Grant

I was in Chicago recently conducting conversations regarding diversity, inclusion and bias. After my first day, I went to my hotel bar for a drink.

Since I rarely meet strangers, a young, white guy in his late 30s and I began to talk. We were having a great conversation. He shared with me that it was the one-year anniversary of his father’s death and that he had been having a horrible day, but our conversation had brightened it immensely.

As we continued to laugh, tell jokes and talk about our beliefs, he said, “You are such a credit to your race.”

Whoa! I was completely drained, tired of talking about all things related to diversity and just overall not in the mood.

Being me, I said, “White boy, what did you just say?”
